Holiday History & Gift Giving Ideas for Paddlers

Every holiday season it is a mad rush to find the perfect presents for your friends and family.  Between old traditions and new demands - it is hard to take time to remember what the fuss is all about to begin with - like what are the origins of some of our more favourite traditions and carols?

For instance.... what do leaping lords, french hens, specifically 5 golden rings, and the partridge who truly enjoys his pear tree have to do with Christmas?

We decided to do some digging and here is what we uncovered......

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Somewhere along the lines, the song we know & love so well today, was actually written as a catechism song for young Catholics - a teaching tool with two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church.   This song was an important teaching tool to the followers of the Catholic faith at this time because any written word showing belief in Christ would ensure not only their imprisonment but perhaps even death by hanging (or worse).  Thus the song's "gifts" became hidden meanings to the teachings of the Christian faith.

The "true love" refers to God Himself.
The "me" who receives the presents refers to every baptized person.
The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

The other symbols are thought to have the following meaning:

2 Turtle Doves = The Old and New Testaments
3 French Hens = Faith, Hope and Charity, the Theological Virtues
4 Calling Birds = the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists
5 Golden Rings = The first Five Books of the Old Testament, the "Pentateuch", which gives the history of man's fall from grace.
6 Geese A-laying = the six days of creation
7 Swans A-swimming = the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments
8 Maids A-milking = the eight beatitudes
9 Ladies Dancing = the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit
10 Lords A-leaping = the ten commandments
11 Pipers Piping = the eleven faithful apostles
12 Drummers Drumming = the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle's Creed

As this song has different meanings, so too this time of year holds different meanings for different people.   Yet many of us do celebrate the season similarly by exchanging gifts.  To help ease some of the difficulty of finding that perfect gift for the paddler on your list - check out these great suggestions:

Besides the obvious Badger Paddle as a gift, why not include our limited edition Badger Paddle "paw"necklace as a stocking stuffer??!!!  Made from shed moose antler, each pendant necklace is handcrafted and shows an artist's rendition of the Badger "paw" logo.  Each necklace is one-of-a-kind and includes an adjustable waxed cord for hanging around the neck.  MSRP:  $20.00 + taxes/shipping.  Contact us for more details.

Another great gift idea for the younger paddler on your list (besides a vibrantly tinted Cub Water Colours paddle) is this great new children's book by Shelly Posen titled "The Christmas Canoe".  It is a story of old traditions mixed with the new as Father Christmas and his elves travel through the sky in a voyageur canoe.  Only $12.95 this book is available at http://www.shelleyposen.com/books.html.  Great reading fun for the kids 'n cubs on your list!

Another great reading suggestion, for the adult paddlers on your list, is a subscription to a favourite paddling magazine.  Right now you can give a four-issue gift print subscription to Rapid, Kayak Angler, Adventure Kayak or Canoeroots for only $14.95! That's a savings of over 58% off the cover price!!! This holiday deal expires on December 18th, so ACT NOW and give the best paddling magazines today!  Enter "HOLIDAYDEC18" as your redeem/coupon code to save.  You’ll even receive a Free One-Year Digital Subscription to the same magazine, a $9.95 value.  Click here for more info & to subscribe: https://www.rapidmedia.com/renew.  And don't forget to check out Swift Canoe & Kayak for a great selection of Badger Paddles, including some Badger Water Colours - if it is gear that you are looking for - or visit Algonquin Outfitters, who still have a few Badger's left in stock.

And our last suggestion is for YOU, a reminder, to take the time to really "dig" your HOLIDAZE!!!!

Badger History: not just any little black box

Today our family had a very interesting lunch.  A family heirloom was brought out that, while the monetary value is very little, the item couldn't have been a more interesting & valuable treasure to Badger Paddles and the great-granddaughter of Sidney Badger, Fiona.

This family heirloom was a little black box filled with memories.

It was a wonderful afternoon spent listening to Sidney's daughter (and Fiona's grandmother) Glady, reminisce about her childhood remembering how her father, Sidney Badger, would carry his little black box to the streetcar stop in travel to downtown Toronto, where he worked as a touch-up artist for RCA Victor Radios and Yollie's Furniture.

"Imagine," Glady said, "he made his whole living for his family from that little black box.  He fed and clothed and housed us 4 children, even during the Great Depression."

She even fondly recalled the "little coloured sticks" that looked like plastic.  These shellac sticks when put under heat, would instantly melt - basically acting as a dent filler which would instantly harden when cooled.  A lost art, the shellac sticks are less available today due to the skills required to use this method and the expense of a burning knife and oven.  Today it is much more popular to use "wood filler".

Interestingly enough,  the box was used by all 3 generations of the men of Badger & Son.    Sidney, his son Don Badger and later his grandson, Mike, all carried on the tradition of bringing the little black box into customer's homes to provide "touch-up" work on their fine furniture and antiques.  This service was used for customer pieces that had a small amount of damage to their furniture's finish and did not need to be fully refinished.

A fine art, touching up the finish on furniture is a very difficult job.  Finishes had to be mixed to be exact thereby ensuring the damaged area was invisible to the eye.  It takes a fine eye for colour and a steady hand to ensure a professional touchup job. Colours and lacquers were mixed on the spot until the artist was satisfied with the match.  Sometimes faux grain had to be "painted" in as well if the damaged finish area was a littler larger then usual.

When Don Badger left the family business in the 80's to his nephew Mike, the only thing he took from the business upon his departure was "Grampa's little black box".

The box was not seen again until recently and upon the passing of Uncle Don where it was located in a garden shed by the family.

"There is was..." Mike recalled over a meal of fish & chips, "under a bench on the floor and hidden by a roll of carpet and tarpaper.  But as soon as I saw it  I recognized it.... I knew it was Grampa's little black box.".

Mike (a.k.a. Poppa Badger) quickly saved the box to ensure it was not overlooked or thrown away.  Thankfully, Mike is a great collector of local history, and was happy to give the box a protected home so that the memories of Grandpa Badger's little black box could be shared with future generations and you, our valued customer.  This box was not only filled with articles from the past, but also with family stories, which are the greatest heirloom of all.
For more history on Sidney (see black and white picture) or Badger & Son, please visit the Badger & Son website's History page.

BADGER UPDATE:  December 12/09
Just this week Fiona received an unexpected phone call from Poppa Badger where he generously and respectfully offered to pass Great Grampa's little black box to her.  Overwhelmed and overjoyed... Fiona accepted the gift that her father was so graciously willing to share with her.  Thank you Poppa Badger!!!  The little black box has been given another loving home and it will be cherished there, always.

To Badger or not to Badger

Do you know the origin of the term "to badger"?

"Badgering"is also known as pestering, bothering, nagging, or teasing.  But these traits are not from the animal itself, but rather from the early sport of Badger Baiting whereas hunters would send dogs to harass badgers for entertainment and for blood sport.  Similar to dog fighting, badger baiting was forced combat between the badger and a succession of hounds.  Badger baiting, now thankfully illegal, would typically end with the death of the badger and most likely major injury to the dogs.  So it seems the origin of the term descends from human behaviour towards the badger and not the animal's behaviour towards humans.  Thus, this retired sport became a popular term still used widely today.

But we love when fans "badger" us with questions and comments on our facebook page or by email.  In fact, we love it so much that we decided to award our most engaged and interactive fan of Badger Paddles... for those who dig the water a special token of our appreciation and gratitude for their continual encouragement and support.

And we already have our winner - paws down!  Patty from Southern Ontario has proven to be our most encouraging and supportive fan on Facebook.  Patty always has great feedback for Badger Paddles... for those who dig the water and we want her to know just how much we appreciate her support.

Patty will be receiving her NEW Badger Paw shed antler pendant necklace made specially for Badger Paddles for her contributions made to our fan page on Facebook.  It is our gift to Patty, who we hear loves fishing and spending time at the lake with her family in the Kawartha region.  Thanks Patty!

Canoe Paddle Maintenance Tips - Oil or Varnish

Every day brings us closer to snow and frozen waterways which also brings our paddling season to an official close. Although there is still open water at the moment, the days have become too cold, for most of us, to get out on the water. Putting our gear away for the season and our end-of-season equipment maintenance is usually done around this time of year for all, except the hard-core paddler. So when packing away your tents and canoes for the season - don’t overlook your paddles! Keeping that in mind, we are offering the following End-of-season and other Badger Canoe Paddle Care Tips for our customers.

Care of your Badger Canoe Paddle(s)

Hand-Rubbed Oiled Paddles**
The amount of maintenance that an oiled paddle needs depends on the amount of use it gets in a season. For instance, a paddle that is to be used daily or up to 4 days/week, we recommend oiling your paddle every few weeks or as needed. For paddles used only on the weekends or less, Badger Paddles recommends you re-oil your paddle every one to 2 months or as needed. Even if your oiled paddle is only used once in a year, we recommend you oil your paddle at the begining and end of every season at minimum, or as needed. You may use a fine marine tung oil product like Behr or boiled linseed oil. For more tips on oiling your Badger Paddle, please visit our maintenance page.

Hand-Rubbed Varnished Blades & Varnished Blades**
To truly keep your paddle in it’s best condition, a varnished paddle should be checked for any “scars” from use at the end of every season. “Scars” include nicks or heavy scratches or other abrasions in the varnish finish. “Scars” can be caused by coming into contact with rocks or other hard surfaces while in use or at play. These “scars” should be sanded out first (if possible) and the entire varnished surface be given a light sanding with a fine sand paper. This helps the new coat of marine-grade varnish that now must be applied to have better surface adhesion.

You may only want to "feather-out" the scar by sanding lightly.  Not only will this be easier but it will allow a natural patina to acquire on your paddle.  These scars may even hold memories for you.  In the case of really deep scars, you may need to fill with a coloured wood filler, sanding level before finishing with a good quality marine grade varnish.
Before varnishing, wipe clean with a soft cloth or a tack rag to remove any surface dust. If you are only varnishing the blade of your paddle - use painters tape to give a clean edge-line to your finish. Using a brush made of natural fibre or sponge, brush on the varnish according to the manufacturers directions. Hang to dry in a dust free environment.

For a full look at varnishing a paddle, watch our video "How To Varnish A Wood Canoe Paddle (At Home)".

Please note all our varnished blades come with an oiled shaft and grip, except for WaterColours. We do offer a fully varnished paddle as a special order. For tips on how to maintain your oiled shafts and grip, please refer to the Oiled Paddles section above.

Storage of your Badger Paddle(s)
Because Badger Paddles are solid wood canoe paddles, it is best to hang them from their grip(s) or lay them down. This is especially true for long term storage, for if a solid wood paddle is left leaning for too long a period - it may warp.
-------------------------------------------------------

Don’t want to do the maintenance? We can do it for you as we also offer paddle refinishing. Contact us at info@badgerpaddles.com for more details.

**Caution: Always work in a well ventilated area when using any of the products needed to maintain your Badger Paddles. Also note the products used to maintain your paddles are flammable and subject to spontaneous combustion. All rags, especially those used to oil paddles, must be spread out to dry completely before disposing of for safety purposes.

Hand-rubbed Varnish Finishes - Our Unique Specialty

Have you ever heard of a hand-rubbed varnish finish before?

What is it?

A hand-rubbed varnish finish is another term used to describe a fine polishing by hand.

This technique (hand-rubbed varnish finishes) has been taught over four generations at Badger & Son's and was passed down from Great Grampa Sidney Badger. For a full history of Badger & Son and our family please visit the Badger & Son Website.

Badger Paddles - Hand-Rubbed Varnished Blades
Our paddles are treated to a high quality finish - like that used on furniture. Our hand-rubbed varnished paddles are strong and smooth to the touch yet our finishing process helps to eliminate some of that "slippery" feeling when wet (like a regular varnish finish). You can see where the varnish ends the the hand-rubbed oiled shaft and grip begins.

After being given 3 coats of a high quality marine varnish - our paddles are left to dry. Once the proper amount of time has been given for the finish to cure, we begin our hand-rubbed treatment.

Polished smooth to the touch, this hand-rubbed technique gives the strong varnish, a silky smooth texture and high-quality finish. Many people may have noticed the finishes on their
varnished paddles from other paddle-crafters may have
defects like bubbles or maybe a hair from the brush or drip marks. Our hand-rubbed varnish finish is without these issues.

When you feel the hand-rubbed varnished blade of a Badger Canoe Paddle is becomes a pleasurable tactile experience. We fall in love with nearly every paddle we rub down... it is hard to see them go out the door sometimes. But we love to hear from our customers how delighted they are with their purchase and how much they love the hand touch we bring to all our paddles.

For more information about our varnish finishes please contact us. If you would like the paddle you already own to be given a similar treatment - please know we also do PADDLE REFINISHING. Contact us for more detail.

We offer hand-rubbed varnished blades with oiled grips and shafts, however, we will do a hand-rubbed varnish finish on the entire paddle as a custom order if desired.

A "Premier" Custom Badger Paddle Order

This past summer, Badger Paddles had the opportunity to work personally with the Premier of Ontario, Mr. Dalton McGuinty.

This custom ordered paddle (see top photo) was a special gift to be signed by the Premier before returning to Badger for finishing. The end result was really spectacular and the lucky recipient of this paddle now has a true collector's item.

But the story doesn't end there...

Just this past week, we were surprised to find a personal letter in our mail box from the desk of the Premier reading:

Dear Mike,
Thanks so much for all your help with the paddle you produced so quickly for me. It is gorgeous.
The guy I gave it to loves it. Which is all that counts.
Very Best Wishes,
Dalton

We, at Badger Paddles, were honored by this opportunity and recognition and are truly pleased to find the intended recipient was happy with the result. We really dug the project too!

Thanks to all the staff at the Premier's office that were so helpful in making this project happen so smoothly and on such a short time-line, as well as Ms. T. Sobers and Mr. McGuinty - himself - of course!
